In
the fall of 1994 I traveled with artist and climber Gregory
Frux, his wife Janet, also an artist, and friend Ann Garvin
to Bolivia. Hiring the services of Andes Expeditions, owned
by Bolivias pre-eminent climber and first Native American
on Everest, Bernardo Guarachi, we traveled by Toyota Landcruiser
to parts of the country otherwise inaccessible to travelers.
From the high moorlands of Ulla Ulla National Park on the border
with Peru, to the volcanic deserts and salt lakes of the Sud
Lípez, this trip was an adventure that included a total
eclipse of the sun and ascents of several of Bolivias
high mountains. Eight paintings are a visual journal of different
experiences on that trip. Three are reflections on a subsequent
trip to Ecuador. Far more sophisticated than Bolivia, it is
a tiny country of tremendous variety in landscape and peoples,
and memorable experiences none the less.
